Stanwick Preschool is run by a voluntary committee, and part of its role is fundraising. Last year, the committee had been looking for a way to involve the whole village in its fundraising and came up with the idea of a Scarecrow Festival & Trail.

That seemed to do the trick as everyone was talking about the scarecrows and walking around the village looking at them. There were over 70 entries and people came up with all sorts of imaginative ideas. Maps were sold so that people could take part in the trail around the village.

On the last day of the festival, a ‘judging ceremony’ was held at the Millenium Gardens where people came to eat cake and listen to the judge’s decision. Joss, who works in the village shop, was asked to be the judge as she is so friendly and approachable.

She was very excited but, when the time came, she found it very difficult to judge. In the end, Joss chose her four favourites and the winner, Scruffy the Dog, was chosen at random from these.

Over £770 was raised for Stanwick Preschool and lots of lovely toys and resources were bought for the children. This year,

The Scarecrow Festival is taking place from Saturday 19th through Sunday 27th September and Stanwick Preschool hopes that lots of people will create fantastic scarecrows again.

The entry cost is £3 and maps will cost £1 from the village shop or preschool. This year, the judging will be open to the public and people will be able to vote for their favourite scarecrow.

The results will be announced, with a prize for the winner on the final Sunday afternoon in the gardens next to the village hall.

The committee members hope that people will come from far and wide for the Scarecrow Trail. For more information, please contact Jane on 07958 483 494.
