Ewa and Gareth Wildman from Achurch have
recently taken over Samuel Pepys, the country
pub and restaurant in Slipton.  The couple
already run two event management and stage
building businesses but fancied a lifestyle
change and now treasure the challenge of
running the pub they so often visited and
admired before.

With little time to turn around for the grand
opening on 15th  April, Ewa and Gareth has
now made the place their own, keeping the
country feeling, farmers’ bar and the light and
airy conservatory restaurant for dinner service
and private parties.   The two bar areas offer a
great selection of drinks including some local
brands of real ale and Saxby Cider.  The pub
has a secluded garden and car park for 40
vehicles.  All well behaved dogs are welcome
in the bar area.

As foodies themselves, Ewa and Gareth’s daily
goal is to create, serve and enjoy fine food.
They stock the restaurant kitchen in much the
same way that they stock their home kitchen,
with daily deliveries of fresh ingredients that
they select them at market each morning: fresh
food, full of flavour, in season and distinct.  The
food is freshly prepared with local ingredients
where possible.

The award-winning chef Grant Wentzel comes
from The Rose & Crown in Yardley Hastings
and has previously worked at The Pheasant
in Keyston.   In addition to the menu, Samuel
Pepys offers daily specials inspired by
seasonal ingredients or culinary discoveries
made by Ewa & Gareth on their many travels
around the world.

Examples from the specials
menu include rocket pasta, asparagus, garden
pea, cherry tomatoes, parmesan and smoked
mozzarella, priced at £12, and pan-roasted
corn-fed chicken supreme with sautéed jersey
royal potatoes, asparagus and carrots in
a red wine jus, priced at £16.  Nibbles such
as habbas picantos or whitebait with tartar
sauce range from £2-£4, and on the desserts
menu you will see a range of temptations
including flaming crème brûlée, priced at £6,
and Santiago almond tart with bitter orange
and vanilla ice cream, priced at £6.50.  There
are always options for gluten-free, vegetarian
and vegan customers, and you will also find
traditional Sunday Roast with all trimmings as
well as Afternoon Tea on the menu.
