Opening of new School Hall

Snow on the last day of half term did not prevent Geddington C of E Primary School from celebrating the Opening Ceremony of its new School Hall. On Friday 10th February, pupils watched with delight as the red ribbon was cut by using one metre long scissors and a brushed steel plaque to mark the occasion was unveiled. The official opening was carried out jointly by dedicated Head Teacher Sue Spooner, ex-pupil Cllr Jim Harker from Northamptonshire County Council and long-serving Chair of Governors Phyllis Lockwood, emphasising the visionary team work behind the planning and building of the School Hall.

Invited guests included county councillors and officers, members of the construction and architectural teams, governors, past members of staff and past and present chairs and vice chairs of governors and the Parents’ Association, whose ardent fundraising has been instrumental in kitting out the new hall and the playground surrounding it. Cllr Harker spoke of his own days at Geddington Primary School and Phyllis Lockwood portrayed the excitement over the hall, from the first cutting of the sod to the joy on the children’s faces when it was first used in October of last year. Class 6 performed a trip down memory lane and all the children sang a special song composed for the ceremony. Fizz and a school cake were enjoyed by the adults and the children celebrated with school-logo-topped cup cakes and received a special school hall zip clip to mark the occasion.

The spacious 145m2 hall has had a significant impact on the day-to-day life of  Northamptonshire’s first ECO school. The children can now enjoy hot lunches, have plenty of space for PE and other activities and parents and grandparents are no longer restricted in numbers for performances and assemblies because of lack of space. Last year’s Year 6 pupils, who worked in the building environment but did not get to experience the benefits of the hall, were invited to join their old school for lunch earlier in the day.

The School Hall is ideal for games and other sports activities and is open to the wider community for hire.
