At Kettering Osteopaths we have a wealth of experience in the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of sports injuries at all levels, from the enthusiastic amateur to elite athlete.

By using their knowledge of anatomy and their technical skills, osteopaths are able to diagnose and treat all types of joint, muscle and ligament strains and injuries. This may include conditions such as ankle sprains and strains, shoulder and rotator cuff injuries or achilles tendon problems. For other conditions, such as a damaged meniscus in the knee (knee cartilage) or cruciate ligament injuries, we can help in the diagnosis and rehabilitation, or advise on referral for surgery if this is indicated.

Osteopaths are also able to help with improving joint mobility, and work on soft tissue restrictions, so that movement is restored or improved, and performance is potentially enhanced. This is often done using massage and articulation techniques; manipulation techniques may also be used, if appropriate. Many injuries are the result of overuse (such as tennis elbow or biceps tendon strains) or unaccustomed activity. Changes in style, such as altered golf swing or grip, or incorrect equipment, such as poorly fitting running shoes, can also result in repetitive strain patterns.

Young people are often vulnerable to sports injuries. This is partly due to the fact that they are expecting their developing bodies to perform to high standards, putting exceptional physical demands on their bodies. They may be training very regularly, often without sufficient time for recovery from minor niggles. This is especially true of those teenagers who are playing sport at school, club and representative level, resulting in them playing or training almost every day. Conditions such as Osgood-Schlatters disease or chondro-malacia patellae are often seen in teenage boys and girls that are undertaking lots of running or kicking sports.

At the other end of the spectrum, older sportsmen and women are often carrying old injuries that may have never really been addressed properly. These can either hamper performance or predispose them to another injury as they try to compensate. This could be an old knee or hip injury affecting a running gait, or a previous shoulder injury affecting a tennis serve or golf drive. Often, sorting out an underlying problem can not only enhance performance, but can help prevent further trauma to the affected area, or elsewhere in the body.

Our team of osteopaths has an interest in all types of sports. Some of our practitioners have run marathons or have competed at national and international level in their sporting fields. This makes us ideally placed to offer help and advice for a wide range of patients, across a broad spectrum of sporting activities.
