Olympic Fever Reaches Northamptonshire

On Monday 2nd July the Olympic Torch will be travelling through our region as it crosses Northamptonshire on its way from Coventry to Leicester. To welcome the arrival of the Torch, celebrations have been planned across the county. Corby, Kettering and Wellingborough Councils have been working with local schools, businesses and community organisations to ensure that as many people as possible are able to enjoy the occasion and watch the Torch Procession. Residents are encouraged to line the streets near their homes and places of work to welcome the Olympic Flame and catch this once-in-a- lifetime opportunity as the Olympic Torch Relay passes on our doorstep.

The Torch Procession is expected to arrive near the Dog and Duck pub on London Road in Wellingborough at 11.23am. It will be carried down into Wellingborough town centre, past the Council offi ces at Swanspool House and up Sheep Street, Silver Street, High Street out on to the Harrowden Road. The Torch will then be driven in a vehicle up the A509 to Isham, where it will be paraded through the centre of Isham village at 11.56am, before being taken out of the borough towards Kettering at about midday.

The Olympic Torch arrives in Kettering at 12.07pm on Pytchley Road at the Bryant Road crossing and will be travelling along Barton Road, Windmill Avenue, St Mary’s Road, London Road, Bowling Green Road, Sheep Street and Market Place before breaking for lunch at 12.37pm.

The Relay resumes at 1.39pm from the Market Place travelling along High Street, Gold Street, Montagu Street and Stamford Road, where the Torch will be transported by car to Geddington at the 40mph sign at 1.59pm.

The Olympic Torch is expected to arrive in Geddington along Stamford Road at 2.02pm where Torchbearers will carry the Flame onto Queen Street to the historic Queen Eleanor Cross at 2.06pm. Here the Flame will pass the famous landmark before continuing its journey along West Street, back onto Stamford Road until the edge of the village at 2.16pm.

The 2012 Olympic Torch will commence its journey through Corby at 2.22pm from Weldon Road (A427) from Stanion Lane through High Street, Cottingham Road, Elizabeth Street, Alexandra Road, George Street, Westcott Way, fi nishing on Cottingham Road at the Beanfi eld Avenue junction at 2.54pm.

The fi nal display in Northamptonshire will be in Dingley at 3.07pm when the Torch will be taken along the Harborough Road from the Dingley Village Sign to the National Speed Limit Sign before being taken by convoy to Leicestershire.  The Torch then enters Leicestershire due to arrive in Market Harborough at 3.19pm, travelling from Rockingham Road through St Mary’s Road, Adam & Eve Street, Church Square, High Street, The Square, Coventry Road and fi nishing on Lubenham Hill at 3.45pm, having passed the historic Old Grammar School and St Dionysius Church.

The Torch will travel through Lubenham, Foxton, Kibworth Harcourt and Oadby before heading for evening celebrations in Leicester City.

Torchbearers

Representing peace, unity and friendship, the Olympic Torch will be carried by 8,000 inspirational Torchbearers. Tens of thousands of nominations were made and after a careful selection process the lucky people were confi rmed. For those selected it is their moment to shine, inspiring millions of people watching in their community, in the UK and worldwide.
