Some residents local to Oundle know that their homes will remain warm despite the falling winter temperatures as they have recently benefitted from a free home energy survey from voluntary organisation Transition Oundle. Trained assessors provide householders with advice about simple, no or low cost ways to reduce their energy bills whilst remaining warm and well lit. For a voluntary contribution, thermal images can be taken of their home, which show where heat is escaping.

Energy prices are a current hot topic, with political parties encouraging the energy companies to reduce charges but it seems they may be approaching the issue from the wrong perspective. A recent EC study concluded that British gas prices are the lowest in Europe; the real problem is that our homes are among the least energy efficient; we use many more units per capita even than those in other colder European countries.

Oundle resident, Charlotte Williams always thought she was efficient in her use of energy, but was interested in the idea of an assessment and it was very helpful. She was reminded about simple things which are easily forgotten, such as the savings you can make just by turning off lights when you’re not in the room and only filling the kettle with the water you need. It was also suggested that she get an Eco-Flap for her letter box which has significantly reduced the drafts in her sitting room.

Since the Transition Oundle visit, Kings Cliffe resident, Peter Lloyd Bennett, has improved insulation in his loft which has made a huge different to the warmth in the first floor. There is now triple glazing in the lounge and he has added additional draft proofing round the doors. While Peter is not sure that the household has saved money as energy costs have increased recently, he is convinced that they are benefiting more from the heating that they pay for.
