Celebrating 70 years

Every Monday night, a lively group meets to enjoy an evening of Folk Dancing in Titchmarsh Village Hall. It has been a long tradition and is as fresh today as it was when, over seventy years ago, Miss Stella Skinner, Headteacher of the village school in Titchmarsh, revived local dances collected in the area. At first, this was with the children but quickly it became a popular evening class and the Women’s Institute held country dances regularly. Men were invited and this was the start of the club which still continues.  The traditional dances collected in Titchmarsh are still danced: The Rose Tree, A Trip to the Cottage, and a lively version of Nottingham swing, but there are now many new dances in many different formations and using different rhythms. However, the aim of the evening is the same ... to enjoy the music and dance figures and, of course, the social gathering.  Most of the dances are to a walking step and the aim is for visitors, even on their first night, to be able to join in with confidence. Club members take turns in calling the dances, so that everybody is reminded of the figures, and the dances are walked through first. We dance to CD’s but also have nights with club members or local musicians leading a band.  Why not come along and join us? There is a printed programme which also includes dances on a Saturday night with well known callers and bands.

Would you like a dance for your social group or perhaps to celebrate a family occasion with friends? If you would we can arrange this for you. A caller will have a range of simple dances and the music will get everybody’s feet tapping and ready to join in.

Our club night is on Mondays 8pm to 10pm.  Admission is £1 including tea and cake/ biscuits.

Please call George on 01933 622827 for a Club Programme or to discuss your possible date and arrangements for a dance in your village.
