A joyful occasion is promised by The BB Society when it celebrates the life of one of Northamptonshire’s most famous sons: Denys Watkins- Pitchford - BB - during a commemorative church service on 8th September.

The service will be held at All Saints Church in Lamport where BB’s father was Rector in the 1920s, marking the 25th anniversary of BB’s death, and will pay tribute to this prolific artist and writer. BB was so in love with the British countryside, always trying to preserve it; he hand raised birds and butterflies to save them for future generations. The service starts at 11am and will be led by Society member Reverend Tom Gladwin, supported by resident Reverend Canon Mary Garbutt, and will feature readings by BB Society members from his published works including extracts from BB’s autobiography A Child Alone.

Organised by the BB Society, which is now in its 15th year, this is one of many memorial occasions put on to celebrate BB’s achievements in the literary, artistic and conservation realms.

Today his epitaph ‘Look ye also while life lasts’ holds particular resonance as we are now even more aware of habitat destruction and the importance of trying to establish wildlife corridors so that there is something to leave behind for youngsters to appreciate.

All Saints Church in Lamport was very much a part of BB’s life. He was born in the Rectory opposite, attended services as a child, and he even left his mark on the church when he took a pot-shot at a marauding pigeon and managed to hit the stained glass window!
