Remember, remember…

Saturday 5th November at 6.30pm sees the
start of Barnwell Bonfire. Planning has gone
on for nine months at The Montagu Arms and
around the village and all will be revealed at
the fields of Barnwell Village Hall.

For over 20 years, the residents of the small
village of Barnwell near Oundle have pulled
out all the stops to host a giant bonfire party.
In 2013, it occurred to the bonfire builders
that the enormous pile of pallets and assorted
waste wood could be made into something a
little more creative. Taking their inspiration
from the Norman castle in Barnwell, a replica
castle complete with drawbridge was created.

The following year, following a TV series about
the Great Fire of London, a replica of Pudding
Lane was built and inevitably burned. Barnwell
Bonfire’s fame spread as far as YouTube and
can still be viewed there in the form of an Ode
to the Great Fire of London/Barnwell.

In 2015, it was the turn of Tower Bridge to
be recreated complete with London buses
and taxis. When BBC Look East rang to say
they were broadcasting live from the village
event there was a little panic. The extremely
damp weather meant the instant blaze
expected at 6:59pm precisely was hard to
achieve. By 7:15pm Tower Bridge was blazing
spectacularly but by then the One Show was
in full swing! Maybe they can come back for
another try this year?

So what about this year? Whatever the theme
there will be an enormous bonfire, great food,
traditional drinks, a spectacular professional
firework display and a warm village welcome!
Adults £5, children £4, under 5s free.
