Life is better when everyone can
read well and express themselves
confidently. Sadly, last year over 11 %
of children across England left primary
school unable to read to the expected
level. Being unable to read well can
have severe consequences on a child’s
future. By becoming a Beanstalk trained
reading helper you can change this. You
can transform a child’s life by giving them
the skills, confidence and imagination to
reach their full potential.

Beanstalk is a local children’s literacy
charity that supports over 700 children
in Northamptonshire through recruiting
and training reading helpers. Over 200
individuals are currently giving up their
time to help out in local primary schools
through Beanstalk and they make a real
difference to the children’s confidence
and wellbeing.

Each Beanstalk-trained reading helper
supports three children, on a one-toone
basis, for two afternoons a week
and therefore provides much needed
consistency and support to the children.
Sessions are child-led, with a mixture of
reading, conversation and play to engage
the children.

The role is open to volunteers of all ages,
but seems particularly popular with retired
individuals as it offers a structure and the
opportunity to give back something back
to the community. The latest Beanstalk
volunteer survey showed that 98% of
reading helpers would recommend
becoming a reading helper to others
Training and a DBS check is provided as
well as ongoing support from Beanstalk.
