Did you know how to buy great meat for less?

Firstly thank you to all that voted for us in the Great Food Magazine, we have been shortlisted as one of three fi nalists in the Northamptonshire secti on of the competi ti on. As with all small businesses the fi ght to be noti ced is one of the hardest to achieve on a small marketi ng budget, so, a big Thankyou for helping raise our profi le. We are in the midst of summer, BBQ’s, fairs at every corner. We enjoyed a great couple of days at Lamport Festi val of Country Life during one of the May Bank holidays.

Angus was on show in the fi elds with Polly and her litt er of eight piglets, Jessie our handreared highland calf and a fl ock of noisy cade lambs. It was like kiddies’ corner with families able to get very close and stroke them. It is being menti oned daily in the media that animals fed on purely pasture are bett er for us.

Unti l we began the farm, I really didn’t understand these benefi t. Every day in the shop, we are telling people why they should be buying this kind of meat, and I thought it would be good to share it with you. As a starter, we are talking mainly the animals that have more than one stomach. Pigs, for example, are mono-gastric; cows and sheep on the other hand have more.

Here are some extracts from Pastoral for Life: Beef is bett er for human health than grain-fed beef in ten diff erent ways: • Lower in total fat • Lower total and saturated fat content • Higher in total omega-3 fatt y acids (good fats) • A healthier rati o of omega-6 to omega-3 fatt y acids • Higher in conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), a potenti al cancer fi ghter • Higher in vaccenic acid (which can be turned into CLA) • Higher in vitamin E, B vitamins and beta-carotene • Higher in the minerals calcium, magnesium and potassium

Many of these also apply to Pasture Lamb. Pasture Farming is Environmentally Friendly Farming: • Lots of legumes, white and red clover, help the other grasses and plants grow without chemical-based ferti lisers, which can make the soil acid and unhealthy.

These arti fi cial ferti lisers are also expensive and made from nonrenewable sources of energy. • Grazing animals return nutrients and organic matt er back to the ground as they pass by and deposit their dung. This natural process ensures the soil remains healthy and ferti le and alive with many fl owers, insects, birds and mammals. • The carbon footprint is signifi cantly lower than that of farms where cereal crops are grown to feed the animals. Grassland helps to capture and store carbon so less is released into the air to harm the atmosphere.
