Spring may seem some time away but the ‘Snowdrop Walk’ at Harrington reminds us that winter will eventually end and that we can look forward to lighter and warmer evenings and the countryside wild fl owers that come with the new season. The agricultural village of Harrington, with a population of about 100 residents, is at its best in early spring when a beautiful natural display of snowdrops and aconites blend with picturesque stone cottages and other places of natural and historical interest.

Against this backdrop, The Harrington Snowdrop Country Walk takes place on the afternoon of Sunday 12th February 2012, from 1pm to 4pm. This is a short unaccompanied rural stroll which will start at the Village Hall, in the High Street, where an information pack is available at £2. This will include a route map, a brief history ”Harrington Through the Ages“ and general highlights of the walk. The suggested route will embrace part of the High Street with its picturesque stone cottages, the well-known Tollemache Arms and the secluded Church Walk to the 13th century Parish Church of St Peter and St Paul. The return route provides an excellent view of the listed historical site of the ‘Falls and Fishponds’, which were once part of a Manor House associated with the Knights Hospitallers. Access to this site is by kind permission of Mr & Mrs B Warner.

The walk, which is not physically demanding, will take about an hour and end at the Village
Hall where excellent tea and cakes will be served. The proceeds from this charity event will be for the maintenance and improvement of the 200 year old Village Hall, which serves the residents of Harrington and Thorpe Underwood.

Harrington was listed in the ‘Doomesday Book’, completed in 1086 at the behest of William the Conqueror, as a small rural farming community and the peace and tranquillity generally remains today. Visit on Sunday 12th February and judge for yourself.

Currently, the snowdrops and aconites are beginning to show leaf and, if all goes to plan, should be in fl ower mid February. However, nature does not always do as we would wish and ‘snowdrop updates’ will be posted on our website in the preceding weeks. For details please visit www.harringtonandthorpeunderwood.co.uk
