The excitement is mounting as the World Conker Championships makes a welcome return to the sporting arena; after a twoyear search for a new venue the 2013 Championships has moved to the charming rural location of the Shuckburgh Arms in Southwick; this new village location with traditional country pub re-captures the cosy, sheltered atmosphere of past Championships when it was held at Ashton.

There are a few changes this year, gone are the separate men’s and women’s categories - now everyone competes together. Tina Stone from Glapthorn and twice ladies champion is looking forward to challenging the twice world champion Ray Kellock from Rushden. As usual there is the popular team event and junior competition that is once again sponsored by Crest of London.

Aside from conkers there is a varied entertainment programme including music from Five String Thing, guide dog demonstrations, face painting, stalls, a craft fair featuring hand made items from local artisans, an art exhibition by pupils of Glapthorn School and of course plenty of refreshments, teas and cakes in the village hall and delicious food and beer served by David Dixon and his team from the pub.

As always, money raised from the World Conker Championships is donated to charities for the blind and partially sighted and to date £390,000 has been raised. There is something for everyone on Conker Day so why not come along and be part of this traditional event on Sunday 13th October, the fun starts at 10.30 am.
