Kunzite - The Evening Stone

I do wish I had a fiver for every person who has said: “Bless You”, when I’ve mentioned Kunzite.

However, it gets worse! At the Saatchi exhibition last year a German lady came on the stand and we were conversing well; in English, I hasten to add. She pointed to a ring and asked me what the beautiful pink stone was. I couldn’t resist and said: “Gesundheit.” After my muddled explanation it all got lost in translation and she left the stand giving me a rather puzzled and sad look. It served me right. My sense of humour is oft misunderstood!

Kunzite comes from the rather unromantically named spodumene family and is ash grey to baby pink through to a vibrant pink in colour. It is a very feminine, romantic stone and it has the wonderful property of phospherence - it seems to store light and gently glow in darker
conditions. Depending upon the angle viewed it can change from pink to violet. Its pink colour comes from traces of manganese. This can fade in sunlight over a period of time so it’s best used in ”evening” jewellery. It is a reasonably hard stone at 6-7 on a scale where 10 is diamond hard, and can be used in rings if treated gently.

It is found in quite large crystals (Wikipedia mentions one found in South Dakota at 47 feet). That aside, the large crystals of gemstone quality lend themselves beautifully to statement pieces of jewellery. I have made a beautiful diamond, pink tourmaline and pink sapphire pendant featuring a huge kunzite at the centre, featured above. This particular piece is made in 18ct white gold and, as I remember, was fairly heavy. I’ll try for
palladium next time!
