Music Scholars’ Concert Thursday 7th September, 7.45pm Great Hall, Oundle All welcome, no tickets required The grand drape of our Term’s stage is opened by a selection of our more established Music Scholars. All Music Scholars and Exhibitioners will be in attendance as we seize this opportunity to reunite and welcome our new award holders in our first week of the School year.
String Quartet Composition and Competition Launch Friday 15th September, 7.45pm Great Hall, Oundle All welcome, no tickets required Students from the Royal College of Music will be confirming the string quartet as one of the most beautiful mediums in the world of music. Our pupils studying academic Music will be picking up many a nugget of information and stealing many a compositional idea ahead of a few works of toil in the composition studio. We look forward to their return in January to play through works in progress, before the final competition and recording of completed works in our annual Composers’ Concert on Wednesday 14th March 2018.
The programme will include contrasting movements from Shostakovich’s String Quartet No.3, Schubert’s Quartettsatz in C minor, and Mozart’s String Quartet No.21 D major KV575.
Concert at Yarwell Church Saturday 23rd September, 7pm Yarwell Church, PE8 6PR. As part of the Field Weekend, some of our pupils who have elected Music as their ‘Wednesday Afternoon Activity’ will be performing this concert in the attractive and intimate setting of Yarwell Church. The talented group will offer a mix of solos and ensembles. Tickets £10 to include a glass of wine, available from 01780 789988 or 01780 782873. Concert in aid of church funds.
Come and Sing The Armed Man A Mass for Peace (Chorus & Orchestra) Sunday 1st October, 7pm Great Gransden Church, Sandy, SG19 3DU Calling all singers! Parents, staff, community, pupils, friends and Old Oundelians are all welcome. We are gathering our chorus to unite to perform Karl Jenkins’ much-loved A Mass for Peace under the baton of Oundle School’s Director of Music, Quentin Thomas. We are offering this event as a ‘Come and Sing’ opportunity, open to everyone to turn up on the day, and to enjoy a performance three hours later. We will also be performing Fauré’s Requiem and Parry’s Blest Pair of Sirens on Sunday 10th June 2018 and then Brahms’ Ein Deutches Requiem in November 2018.

Scholarship Training Day Thursday 5th October, 11am to 6pm Gascoigne Aimed at prospective scholars in Years 7 and 8, we introduce pupils to Oundle School’s Music team. We help prepare pupils for the scholarship process, work with them on their repertoire, aural tests, sight-reading and on what to expect from Oundle. A lunchtime concert, Q&A session for prospective parents and, best of all, a chance to play along with our Chamber Orchestra or Jazz Band – an experience that we hope will inspire and enthuse. Rushden Town Band recently qualified for this year’s Brass Band Championships National Finals, held in September. Directed by our Head of Brass, Adele Hudson, the Band is offering a glittering programme of music pulled from the iconic film soundtrack of Brassed Off. We hope players from our own Laxton Brass will feature in this concert, along with Thomas Fountain who is the invited soloist and one of the country’s finest cornet/trumpet players. Massed Young Musician’s Day Friday 13th October, 1.30pm Venues across the School Having held individual days for Strings, Brass and Woodwind, the resounding message from schools was that attending multiple events was difficult. Thus we held our first Massed Young Musicians’ Day last year and are now building upon this whilst maintaining the specialism of the instrumental families. Oundle’s Heads of Instruments, alongside many experienced tutors, will lead workshops and performances for all grades, ages and abilities in venues around the School, working towards a final presentation. 10am registration and rehearsals, 1pm lunch, please bring your own picnic. Masterclass Series Tuesday 31st October, 6pm Oundle School Chapel All welcome, no tickets required An exciting new venture in the approach towards Advent is this series of Masterclasses with a focus on Bach, featuring a little open teaching and performances from both pupils and teachers. As the evening darkness draws in, we hope to offer a moment of candlelight and pure, beautiful music each Tuesday at 6pm for an hour. We are grateful in advance to these Masters of their Art who will be steering each session, this one with Alec Hone, Head of Keyboard.
