Husband & wife team, Martin and Eleanor Allen, took over Sage & Brooke in October 2017.  Their picturesque bistro and restaurant is located in the Grade II listed, former Post Office of the idyllic hamlet of Grafton Underwood, and offers a characterful setting with inglenook and exposed beams. Both chefs by profession, Martin & Eleanor have also been involved in the family small holding in Wymington, which supplies the restaurant with home-butchered Dexter beef and Gloucestershire Old Spots/Tamworth pork.  They have now settled in Grafton Underwood with their young daughter, Penelope, and are enjoying getting to know their new community.

Eleanor is a patisserie specialist, which explains her love of making the delicious cakes that are served with a cup of coffee or tea during the daytime at only £3.  She also runs the front of house while Martin creates delights in the kitchen.  The emphasis is on high-quality food using local produce whenever possible, and he describes his cooking as classic with French inspiration.  Bread is freshly made on the premises and, as in France, you get a complimentary basket with your meal.  Saxby’s Cider produced in Farndish is available from the bar, which also stocks a range beer from Kettering’s Potbelly Brewery.

The seasonal menu changes regularly, and you will always find vegetarian options.  Starters include celeriac & bay panna cotta with candied walnuts, Shropshire Blue beignet and pickled apples & herbs at £6, and vanilla & whiskey-cured chalk stream trout with beetroot, fennel & rye bread croutes at £6.50.  Mains typically start at £12, such as confit leek & chestnut tart with kale, young carrots & chive hollandaise, through to £17 for Gressingham duck breast with five spice & shallot sauce, dauphinoise potato, kale, celeriac & golden beetroot.  Desserts are priced at £5 and include chocolate fondant, sticky toffee pudding, tarte aux pommes and an artisan cheese selection served with chutney, celery & crackers.  Pies are a Wednesday special, with Steak Night on a Thursday, and the Sunday Roast menu offers three courses at £18.
