The Sew Studio is the personal vision of
Sally-Ann Best and is borne out of a desire
to teach skills for garment making and soft
furnishings in order to bring the love of
creativity through sewing back to our lives.
Sewing is such a great skill which can be
used in so many situations, if you just like
to dress as an individual or have a body
that doesn’t fi t high street norms. Maybe
you want to sew great costumes for your
children to wear to the school play or make
good quality soft furnishings to make your
house ‘your home’?

Making something with your time and skill
is not just practical, it is food for the soul.
The love of sewing has been a constant
companion in Sally-Ann’s life. Having been
awarded an Honours Degree in Fashion
Design, she ran her own soft furnishings
business for ten years, in addition to her
work at The Sew Studio, she currently
teaches Fashion undergraduates at De
Montfort University.

Sally-Ann tries to move away from the
outdated methods and reputation of
traditional home sewing. She hated sewing
at school and now teaches methods that are
based on industry techniques, resulting in
projects that are faster to put together and
look more professional too. Sewing should
be rewarding and enjoyable so Sally-Ann
avoids endless tacking, which she fi nds
completely unnecessary, and uses minimal
pins giving sewers the confi dence to control
and handle the fabric through the machine.
Drawing on her years of experience as
a curtain maker and tutor at Cambridge
Fine Furnishings to teach skills for curtain
making, Roman blinds and cushions, Sally-
Ann shows with Sew Studio methods how
you can make soft furnishings to the highest
standard available in the trade, virtually all
hand-made, and even giving you confi dence
in your skills to set up your own business.

The Sew Studio does have a regular
curriculum which gets renewed on a regular
basis but is equally happy to tailor classes
to the needs of individuals or group or offer
private tuition. For those who can already
sew, there are classes in pattern cutting,
teaching the skills to create a basic skirt
pattern to your measurements and then
adapt it to different styles, all of which are the
perfect fi t for you. Classes have a maximum
capacity of six to enable each participant
to have personal attention. Fully updated
details are available on the website.
The Pyjama Party, for instance, offers a fun
day in which you learn basic sewing skills
in a relaxed environment. By the end of
the day you will have produced a pair of
PJ bottoms; there is a discount for group
bookings. All classes include tea/coffee
and biscuits, and all-day classes include a
light lunch. For 2015, a cushion class will
be introduced on Friday 16th January and
Saturday 14th February, and Tuesday 10th
February will see the launch of a revamped
soft furnishings course.

The Sew Studio is located along the beautiful
Northamptonshire/Cambridgeshire border;
a haven from the hustle and bustle of daily
life allowing Sally-Ann to provide sewing
instruction in a peaceful, informal setting.
The Sew Studio has ample parking and
is accessible to major road links. It is fully
wheelchair accessible, and Sally-Ann will be
happy to arrange specialised instruction for
any student.
