Trinity CE Lower School in Aldwincle now has an
incredible ‘Outdoor Learning Zone’ thanks to the
hard work and expertise of two of its parents who
championed the project, coordinated the works and
worked endless hours over holidays and weekends to
make it happen. The Trinity Outdoor Learning Zone
was officially opened on Friday 17th October 2014 and
the children have already been enjoying taking their
learning outside.

Stuart Ridd-Jones, who is also a School Governor, took
on the project and combined his expertise in developing
outside spaces with that of Jeremy Burdett. Both are
delighted to have contributed to the team that have
taken a great idea to create an additional learning area
and delivered an impressive space that enhances the
overall school environment.

Trinity is a school well known for its learning model
which is focused on developing children’s independence
and confidence. Part of this model is based on high
expectations for learning and the environment inside is
designed around innovative spaces for the children to
work in. Head Teacher, Craig Charteris, and his team
have spent the last few years creating an amazing
learning environment for the children and as the school
is surrounded by beautiful countryside it was only
natural to create a space outside for the children to
enjoy learning in.

The Outdoor Learning Zone features a range of seating
and space for the children to use, a ‘Learning Lodge’
and its own self-contained working stream and bridge.
The space was previously a willow arbour which had
to be removed when it became infested with wasps,
leaving an unsightly patch of ground by the playground
but now the whole outdoor space looks stunning. The
project has been half funded by the money raised by the
school through the support it gives to other schools and
half funded from a very kind donation from the Barbara
Souster Trust. The Trust supports the school and was
set up to support the education of children in the area.
