Sage & Brooke is a new bistro and restaurant located in the Grade II listed, former Post Office of the idyllic hamlet of Grafton Underwood. It offers a characterful setting with inglenook and exposed beams, complete with a front terrace and large garden overlooking the fields for al fresco dining. The poetic name stems from a combination of the sage bush at the backdoor of the kitchen and the misspelling of the brook across the road when the logo got designed.

The ‘S&B’ fits with the surnames of owners, Eleanor Stinson & Daryl Bryant, and also gives a reference to Daryl’s previous career and the motto of his Army Regiment: ‘Swift & Bold’. Sage & Brooke only opened on 22nd June this year, but is already sitting as the number one restaurant in Kettering and Northamptonshire on TripAdvisor. Not surprisingly, when you see the care and attention put into the food and service by Eleanor & Daryl and their team. The couple has set out to create a bistro that delivers what they would want themselves when they go out for a meal: that you are made to feel welcome, get a great service alongside high-quality, good-value dishes that you perhaps couldn’t have made at home.

Sage & Brooke centres on creating a memorable experience, whether you are popping in for a ‘fresh from the oven’ scone, an ice cold beer and bar snack, or a full meal from the tempting menu. Eleanor’s sister, Olivia, manages front of house and also masters the art of scone making to perfection. The aspirations of the Sage & Brooke kitchen is for the food to be fresh, local, simple and enjoyable. Sage & Brooke makes the most of the fantastic produce available on our doorstep. Red currants and garlic grown in Grafton Underwood are used in the kitchen, and local suppliers are sourced whenever possible.

Meat is delivered by Potters of Stanwick, fruit and vegetables are supplied by Adam’s Apple of Rushden, coffee from Bella Barista in Wellingborough, real ales from Whistling Kite Brewery in Kettering, cider from Saxby’s near Wellingborough, and Warner Edwards gin from Harrington. Fresh fish and seafood is delivered two-three times a week for the ‘Catch of the Day’ menu, and Sage & Brooke recently launched an ‘extra-special specials’ campaign on social media with a weekly dish that celebrates one of the local suppliers, such as pork belly braised in Saxby’s cider with cavalo nero mash, caramelised apples & purée with the braising liquor & crackling crumbs, or the Aberdeen Angus beef burger served on brioche with onions that have been braised in the Whistling Kite’s deep ruby bitter, Starry Kite.

The menu is kept deliberately simple, yet varied and with vegetarian options. Starters begin at £5 and include arancini with balsamic glaze & aioli or crab cakes with orange & fennel salad served with a celeriac remoulade. Main courses, such as griddled haloumi or marinated lamb fillet served with Moroccan potatoes & root vegetables, pumpkin purée and whipped feta, range from £9 to £18 and can be complemented by a series of side dishes at £3 each.

The delicious dessert menu features a warm fig & orange sponge with vanilla crème fraiche at £4.20 or a lemon posset with pistachio biscuit, to name but a few. A selection of snacks and light bites are also available, and there is off-street car parking and facilities for cyclists.

Sage & Brooke is closed on Mondays. Open for cream tea only on Tuesdays from 11am to 3pm. Open Wednesday & Thursday from 11am to 3pm + 6-10pm, Friday & Saturday evening opening is extended until 11pm, and Sunday openings are 11am to 4pm. Booking is strongly advised.
