Charles Taylor is a 24-year-old Broughton resident. He was born profoundly deaf, with a language processing disorder and ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). After secondary school, Charles went to Moulton College and passed his City of Guilds Level 2 in furniture making by hand; however, he was unable to get a job in his chosen field.
Charles has always enjoyed wildlife and birds, so he began making bird boxes as a hobby. To fund his hobby, he began to sell them at craft fairs around the county. Charles has developed his hobby so that he now makes bird, insect and animal houses, particularly for struggling species such as hedgehogs, bees, butterflies, sparrows and swifts.
All wildlife boxes come with an information sheet, giving tips such as best positioning of the box. Charles also makes gifts for the home and garden, including egg racks, bird feeders and bird tables, boot racks, boot jacks window boxes and solid wood backless benches and trough baskets. Products are made from re-claimed, re-used or FSC approved timber, and all finishes are bird and animal friendly. Bespoke enquiries are most welcome.
In July, Charles began working with The Prince’s Trust, the youth charity that helps young people aged 13 to 30 get into jobs, education and training. The representatives were very impressed with the standard of his work, the quality, his ability and vision, and Charles has been assigned a mentor who will help him to establish the business and move it forward. The Prince’s Trust representatives have been most supportive and, because the speed of delivery of their Enterprise course and the language used, which was beyond Charles’ understanding, his mother, Carol, was allowed to take part on his behalf, so she can feed it back to Charles at a speed that suits him and in language he understands.
Charles Taylor’s Workshop is due to launch this spring, just in time for Mothering Sunday and Easter. Check out the Facebook page for details of where Charles will be exhibiting in the near future or order directly. If you wish to contact Charles by telephone, you will speak to Carol.
