The Udder Pre-School & Day Nursery in Little Oakley received an Outstanding mark following the Ofsted inspection in June. Lesley Harker and her team are grateful to everybody involved for their support, including that of the fantastic parents, which helped the family-run business achieve this goal.

The Udder Pre-School & Day Nursery was established in 1999 as a private pre-school based on the unique setting of a working farm. In 2011, the nursery moved into the redundant milking parlour which was converted into a purpose-built nursery and now employs over 20 highly qualifi ed staff with a love for the great outdoors .

The Udder is open 51 weeks of the year, from 8am to 6pm for 1-4 year olds, with a holiday Explorers club for 5-13 year olds.

The Udder ethos is ultimately to spend as much time as possible learning through play outdoors in the open countryside. By following a unique curriculum through the seasons the children learn from having hands on experiences of where things come from and what they can be used for, such as wild garlic in baking and fi nding chalk in the fi elds to write with. Based in the woods and in a move away from conventional toys, the children’s imagination is allowed to run wild with natural resources.

It is especially important to the unique setting to have a building that can replicate the atmosphere of being outdoors, bringing the outside in, resourced with calming colours. As the saying goes, there is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing, and children love all kinds of weather when dressed for it.
