The intelligent answer to exercise

Accredited Body Control Pilates instructor, Elaine Holden, has recently added specialist equipment The Reformer and The Cadillac to her studio facilities in Orlingbury. A back injury in 2001 first prompted Elaine to start practising the physical fitness system developed by Joseph Pilates and she since went on to qualify as a Body Control Pilates Instructor in 2008.

Elaine is registered as a Level 4 Pilates Teacher and a Specialist in Lower Back Pain on the Register of Exercise Professionals, which is recognised by the European Health and Fitness Association. Elaine works closely with Consultants and Physiotherapists and assists
individuals with their rehabilitation from chronic back, knee, ankle, neck and shoulder problems, following injury or surgery. She also holds valid insurance and an Emergency Life Support certificate including Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).

Pilates is a body conditioning method that works the deep postural muscles, strengthening it from the inside out. It aims to rebalance and realign the body, improving your posture and body shape. It increases your mobility and flexibility and strengthens your core muscles. Pilates is suitable for all ages and abilities. Its slow, controlled approach gives longer-term results and is the foundation for good health and fitness. It is widely recommended by medical specialists, particularly in helping those with back problems to gain strength and stability. Pilates teaches awareness of poor movement patterns, helping to change these habits and focus on correct techniques to regain posture and strength.

Elaine teaches group matwork classes at Orlingbury Village Hall on Monday and Wednesday mornings. Classes are limited to twelve students to ensure close supervision and tuition. She also gives one-to-one private sessions and small group sessions in her studio in Orlingbury. These sessions give you the opportunity to have individual attention and ensure that you have a good understanding of Pilates exercises; this enables particular focus on areas which may be affected by injury or pain leading to restricted movement within the body.

This option is also suitable for students who do not wish to join a class or cannot commit to weekly sessions. They are also ideal for students who want to attend additional Pilates tuition to their weekly class.

Students now have the option to work out on the Reformer and Cadillac at Elaine’s studio. Both exercise machines were designed by Joseph Pilates in the 1920s and have remained virtually unchanged. The Reformer is an extremely versatile, resistancebased machine consisting of a complex set of springs, ropes and straps, all connected to a gliding carriage. Exercises can be performed lying down, sitting, kneeling or standing on the carriage and the straps are used to place either your hands or feet in to allow you to push or pull yourself on the carriage against resistance provided by the springs and your own body weight. The variable spring tension allows the exercises to be tailored to the student’s skill level and exercise objectives. There are hundreds of exercises that can be performed on the Reformer which can assist in rehabilitation work, develop your understanding of your body or challenge your knowledge of Pilates skills and techniques, improve your matwork movements, mobility and flexibility and build strength.

The Cadillac, also known as the trapeze table, consists of adjustable moving parts and provides resistance through springs in a similar way to the Reformer. Attached to the frame and bench, this equipment offers an extensive repertoire of exercises and the capability to suit the individual needs of any student. As a combination, this equipment is a fabulous enhancement to any Pilates matwork programme, as it gives the student support and feedback. Pilates can be tailored to developing students’ bodies to improve their performance and techniques in their particular sport from running, cycling, golf, skiing, horse riding, sailing, tennis to team sports.

“In ten sessions you’ll feel the difference, in twenty you’ll see the difference and in thirty you’ll have a new body” Joseph Pilates If you would like further information on any of the classes or private sessions, please contact Elaine on 07866 919 926 or email her on
