You will fi nd Samuel Pepys amongst the pretty stone cottages in Slipton, set in the rolling countryside between Corby and Thrapston. The century-old country inn has recently undergone a complete refurbishment and taken on a new look thanks to local, up-and-coming interior designer Libby Nicholls. Sympathetically undertaken, the work has enhanced the character of the building and given it a relaxing atmosphere yet retained its old charm.

Samuel Pepys is owned by local businessman, Graeme Carsberg, who not only acknowledges that the pub is the heart of the community but supports local businesses and people; the appointment of Andrew Nicholls as General Manager is a confi rmation of this support. Andrew, who lives locally with his family, has worked in various establishments within the area as well as nationwide in restaurants and hotels. His ethos is grounded in customer care and service and in making sure that his customers have a relaxed and enjoyable experience.

Andrew is delighted with the new Samuel Pepys. With the tasteful refurbishment and enthusiastic young staff, this is an exciting time for the pub, especially as it is now lucky enough to have Darren Curson taking over the kitchen. Darren - Northamptonshire’s only Great British Master Chef - will be taking the reins and introducing his menus to Samuel Pepys this January. Michelin trained with experience from the highest rated restaurants and hotels throughout the country, the Yorkshire-born chef has adopted Rushton as his home over the past fi ve years. An AA Centenary award- winner, a nationwide food judge as well as a devoted chef, he works closely with local colleges bringing the new aspiring chefs into the trade.

Darren and Andrew’s philosophy is simple: to make Samuel Pepys the best country pub in the county. Quality, unpretentious cooking with local ingredients and ales will ensure that traditional “pub grub” cooked with care, attention to detail and outstanding fl avours is at the core of Samuel Pepys. Andrew and Darren have planned exciting special events and evenings such as a ‘ Taster Dinner’ consisting of a six-course meal accompanied by hand-chosen wines to compliment the dishes. The evening will be hosted by Darren and Andrew with talks relating to the dishes and wines served. Keep an eye on the website for further information and forthcoming events.

Samuel Pepys is open Monday to Friday from 12-3pm & 5-11pm, food is served from 12-2pm & 6-9pm. Saturday openings are from 12noon to 11pm, food is served 12-2pm & 6-9.30pm. On Sundays food is served from 12-3pm and the pub remains open until 7pm.
