| Home-Start helps families with young children deal with whatever life throws at them: illness, disability, family breakdown, bereavement, isolation. Our volunteers help them to build their confi dence and make sure they have the skills, time and strength they need to nurture their children, and manage the ups and downs of family life. Home-Start works because our volunteers all have parenting experience and know how hard family life can be. They visit the family home for two to three hours every week and work alongside the parents, developing a trusting relationship.
Our Volunteers offer emotional support and a listening ear, as well as practical help, which may include advice with budgeting, routines, cooking, safety and accessing information. We also give direct support to children: playing, listening, having fun. Last year, in Home-Start East Northants, 36 parent volunteers supported 64 families, 111 children aged fi ve and under, and 46 children aged over fi ve. We are having to make fundraising a priority to ensure that our service can continue.
