Health and Happiness for 2012

I hope you’ have all had a happy Christmas and enjoyed time with family and friends. At the shop, we closed on Christmas Eve until January 4th, as lots of fl orists do. All of our fl owers come from Holland during the winter months and, as all of the Dutch markets are closed, fresh fl owers are limited. So it is a much longed for break for us after the hustle and bustle of Christmas.

As we reach another new year, I have mixed feelings. Hope that all of the doom and gloom that we hear every day on every news programme will not be as bad. I do think that if they talked positively instead of negatively, we could all feel a bit more confi dent in 2012!

Sadness for friends we have  lost, and joy that we are past the shortest day. Looking forward, spring fl owers are brightening up the shop now and are such a delight to use. It is so lovely to have fl owers with perfume. As the Christmas decorations come down and the house looks so bare, a lovely bowl of hyacinth bulbs will bring instant colour and scent - push some twigs or palm sticks around the bulbs before the fl owers show as this will stop them falling over the pot when in full bloom.

Gorgeous jasmine plants again will fi ll the room with perfume and pretty starry fl owers. Fill a jug with daffodils; if you are mixing them with other fl owers, cut the stems and soak for a time alone as the sap is poisonous to other fl owers.

My favourites are tulips. Remember to cut theses at least two inches shorter than you want them as they grow in water; this will stop them from fl opping over the vase. I also love ranunculus - little jewels of pleasure. They look so delicate but will last for ages.

So from all of us at The Garden Room, we wish you health and happiness for 2012. Oh, and as this edition covers February, I leave you with a thought for Valentine’s Day:

BE my Valentine, my love,
as I will be for you,
and we will love the whole day long and love our whole lives through x
