Spring is just around the corner, thank goodness! February was such a cold month; on some mornings, the windows of the shop had ice from top to bottom on the inside, reminding me of how it used to be at home. When I was a child, we only had an open fi re in one room downstairs and no double glazing. We often wore more clothes to go to bed in than when we went outside. I would take all my underclothes (and there were lots of them) into bed with me so that they were warm to put on in the morning. Sunday nights were bath nights in a tin bath beside the fi re - how life has changed!

But March sees the days lengthening and it is so good to be driving home in daylight. As
the weather warms up, I long to get into my garden as it wakes from its winter sleep, seeing the plants and fl owers suddenly reappearing after being dormant all winter .

Spring in the shop is always a very busy time. Firstly, Valentine’s Day rapidly followed by Mother’s Day and Easter. Mother’s Day or Mothering Sunday will soon be upon us, this year on Sunday, March 18th. Already, we are preparing lots of planted baskets and pots with a lovely selection of bulbs, twigs and moss, primroses and gorgeous orchids - with lots of things at pocket money prices. It is so lovely when little children come in to choose something for Mummy.

The whole of March is Lent so there are no fl owers in our village church. But on Easter Saturday, churches everywhere will be again fi lled with colours; after the long, grey cold winter, it is so uplifting to use golden daffodils, forsythia and wonderfully scented yellow mimosa. Yellow fl owers are probably my least favourite colour, but this time of year they take central stage.

So to Mums everywhere:
Happy Mother’s Day, and to my Mum: Love you x
