Hello from Waterloo Cottage

Here at Waterloo Cottage Farm we have something that ought to be of real interest to you
and your family’s health. As a member of the Pasture Fed For Life Association Angus is
working hard to pasture raise all our animals and give them no grain fed foods. Recent studies on ruminants pasture raised and grass fed have found:

• Links to reduced tumour growth in animals
• 3-5 times more conjugated linoleic acid (or CLA for short) than grain fed ruminants.
CLA is believed to be one the bodies most potent human defences against cancer
• Studies in the British Journal of Nutrition have shown that healthy volunteers who ate
grass-fed meat increased their blood levels of omega-3 fatty acids (good fats) and decreased their level of pro-inflammatory omega-6 fatty acids (bad fats)
• Scientists have shown that grass-fed meat is higher in vitamin E than either grain-fed animals (four times higher in one study) or, surprisingly, grainfed animals that were given high doses of synthetic vitamin E. In humans, we know that vitamin E is linked with a lower risk of heart disease and cancer
• Lower in total fat
• Higher in B-vitamins thiamine and riboflavin; minerals such as calcium, magnesium and potassium

We have found local land owners who need their grass cutting who are willing to allow us to graze our animals on their land. This allows us to grow more grass on our land, rich in clover (protein) and get several cuts of silage from the grass. We are also growing an unusual high protein crop called Lucerne that puts nitrogen back into the soil. Once established, we will grow this crop for four years and then move onto another part of the
farm in a four-year rotation. Both the silage and the Lucerne will provide us with enough
food to keep our animals properly pasture fed throughout the winter without them having to
eat grain concentrates. This winter was very tough and we didn’t have enough fodder so
had to eke out what we had with some sheep and cow nuts.

You can certainly tell the beef that has been pasture fed, the fat is a yellow golden colour. The pigs are out in pastures and fed pig nuts that are contain non GM modified grain. However, all commercial pig feeds contain soya and this is getting very difficult to buy GM free. The manufactures have warned us that it may not be possible in the near future. We are looking at moving the pigs into pasture fed as well and Angus is going on a course to learn to do this. A tall order, watch this space and we will keep you informed on how we go over the next year.

Great Oxendon Range

A growing number of people are turning to gluten-free foods whether in an attempt to reduce eating grains or due to medical conditions. Here at Waterloo Cottage Farm
we are making sure that where possible our products are gluten free. You will find them
in the shop with a ‘Great Oxendon Range’ label. This does not mean that we have added
anything unsavoury, it just means that there is no flour. So, for example, where a meal
needs thickening we use grated potato with the potato starch thickening sauces. With our
sausages the Great Oxendon Range Pork Sausage is purely pork, salt and pepper. Our Great Oxendon Range Burgers have just beef, salt, pepper, coriander and basil.
