Oundle School Music Department presents an exciting line-up of concerts and performances under the direction of Director of Music, Quentin Thomas which includes:
Lunchtime Concerts: St Peter’s Church Thursdays 8th, 15th, 22nd & 29th January and 5th, 12th and 26th February from 1.15pm Join us on Market Days in this beautiful church setting in Oundle for neatly presented and diverse concerts. Lunch is offered in the form of homemade soup and bread rolls from 1pm for £3, provided by Rachael Kelley of The Little Soup Kitchen. Good company, wholesome food, delightful music – surely the perfect line-up.
Musical Opportunities Concerts Recital Room, Gascoigne Building Wednesdays 21st January & 4th and 11th February at 6.15pm
These concerts offer our pupils a small audience and safe platform to run through new repertoire prior to more demanding settings such as public concerts and exams.
New Year Concert Chapel and Junior Club Sunday 18th January, 4pm Tickets £5 to include refreshments Our annual and popular concert features many of Oundle’s Bands that congregate so purposefully each week. Following the Fifth Form Parents’ Conference and a good lunch, parents and guests are warmly invited to join us for this early evening concert of vibrant music-making.
Frobenius Organ - Chapel Sunday 25th January 4pm - Open Masterclass 5.45pm - Talk with James Parsons 7pm - Thomas Trotter: Celebrity Organ Recital - Tickets: £10 Celebrating 30 years with Thomas Trotter and James Parsons Oundle School is extremely fortunate to have such a beautiful instrument in the heart of our town, built by Frobenius of Denmark in 1984 with the inaugural recital given by Curlo Curley in January, 1985. This organ facilitated James Parsons to initiate the Oundle International Organ Week in 1985 with the concurrent festival programme for the general public becoming the now wellestablished Oundle International Festival under the umbrella of the Oundle Music Trust. The final concert in our celebration of the Frobenius series welcomes internationally renowned Thomas Trotter to Oundle for an Open Masterclass and Recital, preceded by displays and a talk on the design and installation of the organ by James Parsons.
Concert with the Jazz Bands St Peter’s Church Friday 30th January, 7.45pm - Tickets £10 & £15 including a glass of wine and cheese Available from Oundle in Stitches and Sue Thomas 01832 275438 We expect all of our Jazz Concerts to sell out speedily, so please book early to avoid disappointment. Our first of three concerts involving our two Jazz Bands will include standards such as Spain; Sing, Sing, Sing; Georgia on my mind through to pop classics with Stevie Wonder’s Superstition and Rock around the clock.
Woodwind Day with James Rae - Great Hall Sunday 8th February 11.30am with concluding concert at 4.30pm This event is free of charge and open to just about anyone who plays a woodwind instrument - especially youngsters thinking of coming to Oundle School. Please bring your own packed lunch - Liquid refreshments’ will be provided. James Rae is renowned for his successful and varied career in music and his work performing, writing and teaching. He is highly experienced as a player in West End and Royal National Theatre productions, and has played with the country’s leading orchestras, ensembles and conductors. He is the leader of the Phoenix Saxophone Quartet and over the years, has given many recitals and broadcasts. As a teacher, James has held many posts and is currently saxophone professor for the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain. Another new entry is the celebration and exclusive focus on our home-grown composers - after all, there is nothing more exciting than a ‘World Premier’. Every pupil studying music 71 for GCSE, AS and A2 creates music and it is of paramount importance that we bring this process alive. Be amazed by new music created by our many pupils as we feature a diverse selection of compositions written with our own pupils and music staff in mind to perform them. A2 Recitals - Cecil Lewis Room Great Hall Wednesday 25th February, 7.45pm Free tickets from Music Department Having catered for two of our Upper Sixth Form performance candidates with concertos pitted against our orchestras, we have our other four candidates lined up for this special evening with supportive family, friends and staff in tow. You are cordially invited to experience the fruits of labours and to support pupils Phoebe Alexander, Tara Day, George Sinclair and Edward Willey.
Steve Bingham, Violin and Technology Great Hall Friday 27th February 7.45pm - Tickets £5 Undoubtedly one of the most musically diverse violinists in the world today, Steve Bingham is internationally renowned for his work as leader of the Bingham String Quartet and his solo recitals on violin and electric violin, along with a feast of other musical collaborations. As part of the Sixth Form Lectures programme, we have invited Steve to come and demonstrate his work, specifically that which incorporates use of media and music technology, the world of looping and composition.
