Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness...

I love Autumn, always have. I know some people feel sad about moving from summer into autumn, but it’s truly a wonderful time, and the colours of the trees are amazing at this time of year. I remember our English teacher, Mrs Hubner, asking us to learn ‘To Autumn’ by John Keats as part of our homework, and it had real resonance with me. I can still remember most of the words of the first verse at least, and it was quite a few years ago now!

I think because I was an autumn baby, and have colouring which suits the shades of this season, I have always felt an affinity with it. Plus, it is usually still quite mild temperature-wise, having left the sometimes oppressive heat of July far behind - makes working and sleeping a lot easier. At Primary School, we did a play about the four seasons and I was chosen to be Autumn.

I can’t remember much about my costume apart from the head-dress which had imitation copper-beech leaves on it, which I thought was fabulous. I think I even kept it for a while, but I’m fairly sure it has long ago been recycled. Talking of school, it is the start of term for many.

It is a big year for us as my daughter has now left primary school and headed up to secondary, although she actually had to start at the end of August as she’s at a school over the county boundary and their term times are different. It is an important, exciting and nerve-wracking time, because even if your children haven’t changed school, chances are they are in a new class with a different teacher.

It will probably take until the October half-term to adjust, and get back into the swing of things after the long summer holidays. But whatever you are doing, enjoy the beautiful countryside in our corner of Northamptonshire and I’ll see you in November for the run up to Christmas and New Year celebrations!
