As summer slowly makes its way for Autumn, our thoughts at the Garden Centre now turn towards, dare we say it, Christmas. Our actual planning for Christmas starts as far back as January, literally as soon as the previous year’s Christmas season has finished.  Visits are made to Holland to see this year’s trends and ideas and combine the creative talents of the staff here to create our own unique theme, one that is different each year.

As the furniture is packed away, the green curtains start appearing, closing off various areas as the build progresses.  The whirring of drills, screwdrivers and hammers can be heard as the infrastructure is put in place.  Once this is all complete the more “fluffy” side is added with the baubles, decorations and gifts, until the whole area is transformed in to a festive winter wonderland.

Each year we have a pièce de résistance; these have included the Ice Queen and, last year, our flying reindeers and sled.  We like to keep this as a bit of a surprise so you will have to come and visit to see what we have instore this year! Part of our Christmas display that is hugely popular is our Lemax range of villages and scenes.  We sell everything for you to create your own village.  Many of the scenes and houses are automated and there are skaters on a pond, ski lifts and fair ground rides, to name a few; in fact, we are one of the few sellers in this country.  We have even had a collector from Russia order from us and had the items delivered to his hotel in London!

Of course, our events will be up and running again this year.  We welcome the return once again of our Giant Snowglobe, Santa’s Grotto, Tea with Santa and our newest event, which is Storytime with Santa aimed at preschool children.  All these events can be booked in advance by visiting our website and clicking on the Events tab.

Our site at Elton has now been open a few months and we are delighted with its success.  It has been good to meet new customers and see many of our “regulars” from Burton Latimer too.  The signage over the last few weeks has been upgraded to the “Bosworths brand”. One of the exciting projects that we have at Elton is our Secret Garden, which is a walled garden at the back of our plant area.  The garden had gone untouched for many years until the previous owners started its revival.  Diane Ray took a team of volunteers and transformed it in to a working garden.

We are pleased to say that Diane and a team of volunteers is carrying on the garden.  Some of the produce here is used in Mulberry Café giving real meaning to zero food miles!   We are particularly keen on using the garden to bring about positive changes and rehabilitation to those with mental health issues and illness.

To find out more about taking part in this project please call Diane Ray on 01832 343104. The other project we have been working on is The Kettering General Hospital Dementia Garden.  The idea being to transform a run-down courtyard into a seaside-themed garden for patients and their families to “connect”.

The project is being overseen by Jayne Chambers at the hospital and here at Bosworths, Gill has designed the garden and planting plans, and we have created the donations website.  We just have the borders to go and the garden will then be finished.  It’s a great project and we hope that it has positive effects for both patients and their families.
