Café Oak opened in Geddington on Sunday 22nd July, fulfilling a life-long ambition for Sharon & Bernie Hammond. Having first met in Guernsey whilst working as a hotel manager and chef, the couple then opened a small fish restaurant on the island. Sixteen years ago, Sharon & Bernie moved to Geddington to pursue new careers in education and engineering, but they have always wanted to come back to catering and to own their own business. Named with reference to the Royal Oak, once a pub where the current Post Office stands, Café Oak has been created to offer friends, villagers and customers a pleasant space in which to catch up whilst having something good to eat. The barn interior has a vintage feel and there is plenty of outdoor seating in the beautiful cottage garden. Menus are listed on blackboards for breakfast, lunch and lighter lunches, and there is a great display of delicious, home-made cakes and scones. Cream teas are available daily; afternoon teas are by bookings only: £25 for two people. Breakfast ranges from muesli with fresh fruit and milk or beans on toast at £3.50 to the full English with tea or coffee at £8.50, with various options of scrambled eggs, smoked salmon, avocado, etc. Lighter lunches include soup of the day with French bread at £4, croque monsieur with rocket and parmesan garnish at £6, and a range of salads served with warm baguette. The lunch menu includes home-made quiche of the day or fishcakes, both served with new potatoes and a dressed salad at £9.50; home-baked ham, eggs and chips at £8.50, as well as classic beef burger or vegetarian burger served with chips and a dressed salad, to name but a few.
