Weekly sessions to have a singsong with like-minded people.
‘I can’t sing’ you might say, but you don’t have to be a good singer to join the Singing 4 Breathing group; just come along, have fun and sing all types of songs together. Although designed primarily for those with respiratory conditions, anyone who wants to enjoy the singing and support the group will be made very welcome.
The award-winning Singing 4 Breathing group was set up in 2015 by James Wyatt, an Occupational Therapist, who was studying the benefi ts of singing for people with respiratory conditions including Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), asthma and bronchiectasis.
Soon after starting, James teamed up with Chris Startup, an amazing local musician who facilitates the group. Chris has a lot of experience, having been trained by the British Lung Foundation and he incorporates breathing exercises and singing into each session.
Research evidence has proven that singing can benefi t people with COPD by working the diaphragmatic muscles and therefore helping to improve lung function. Singing is also a fun way to practice deep breathing and a great way for people to come together to share their experience and gain support.
Singing in a group such as Singing 4 Breathing not only improves someone’s physical well-being but it can also have psychological and social benefi ts. Meeting together and singing with like-minded people is great fun and many members say that the group is the highlight of their week!
