Young Farmers’ Clubs in Northamptonshire are part of a national rural youth organisation dedicated to young people aged between 10 and 26 who like farming and rural life – but it’s important to note that you defi nitely do not have to be a farmer (or have any connection to farming) to become a member. As long as you have an interest in the countryside and rural issues you’ll be made very welcome.
We have fi ve clubs in the county (Grendon, Kelmarsh, Oundle, Thrapston and Towcester) and unlike most youth organisations they are led by the members, for the members. The regular weekly meetings offer a great social life as well as the opportunity to take part in a wide a variety of competitions, sports, travel, talks, visits, charity fundraising, event planning, learn new skills, have fun and make new friends.
Reaching Out
We were delighted to be awarded a grant from the Scotts of Thrapston Fund (through Northamptonshire Community Foundation) to work on a wellbeing project among young people in the rural and farming communities of Northamptonshire.
We’re working in partnership with the Farming Community Network (FCN) and our aims are to promote positive mental wellbeing, raise awareness of mental health issues, and reduce social isolation. Joining a Young Farmers’ Club is in itself a good way to combat rural isolation and each of our clubs has received Rural+ training which provides information and tools so that they can become a support network for rural young people who may experience rural isolation and mental health issues.
So if you want to meet like-minded people, have a good social life, put something back into the community, want to feel good about yourself and what you’ve achieved, want to learn some new skills, are up for a challenge, want a laugh and to be part of a team – join your local Young Farmers’ Club!!
